Itinerary:
DAY 1 - Friday - 25 February 2011

When travelling (flying) we strongly suggest you wear / carry on you your running shoes & climbing boots - these are crucial for your race & climb, and you do not want to risk losing them in the hold.  Make sure you have your yellow fever certificate with you – you need to produce it on arrival in Tanzania.

Depart OR Tambo International Airport from Johannesburg on Kenya Airways to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania (via Nairobi).

On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, Tanzania (± 1 hour’s drive).  Stay here for 3 nights on a bed and continental breakfast basis (see choice of hotels and cost below).

For the budget conscious, there is the option to fly to Nairobi on Kenya Airways & do a road transfer to Moshi (± 7 hours drive, including the Tanzania / Kenya border crossing at Namanga).

Day 4 - MONDAY - 28 February 2011

Your Wild Frontiers safari guide will meet you at your Moshi hotel this morning and transfer you to Arusha. Start your safari by road and drive to Tarangire National Park.  After a short game drive and picnic lunch continue up the escarpment to Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The 8,300 square kilometre Ngorongoro Conservation Area is named after its central feature, the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, and within which has eveolved an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa's densest populations of large mammals.  The crater floor itself is 260 square kilometres and, from the viewing points at the rim, the vast herds of wildebeest, buffalo and zebra look like mere ant formations winding their way across the grasslands below!  The crater is also home to a great diversity of environments and you may encounter all of the large herbivores mentioned above, as well as lions, hyenas, jackals, male elephants (female and family groups tend to stay up on the higher slopes) and, in the forest around the crater, the occasional leopard and bushbuck.  There is an active black rhino breeding project inside the crater and you may be lucky enough to spot some of these magnificent, shy beasts during your tour, but sightings are limited as breeding areas are strictly protected and usually closed to public access.

Overnight Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion.  Strung around the crater rim, each with its own rock-enclosed balcony, the rooms feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, wildwood mirrors, Maasai carvings and flamboyant prehistoric wall motifs depicting fleeing giraffe, stylised gazelle and plunging buffalo.  Each room draws on a cave-grey, indigo-blue and jasper-red colour scheme and enjoys uninterrupted views over the Crater’s unmatched splendour.

Day 5 - TUESDAY - 01 March 2011

After breakfast, descend for a crater tour (6 hours) returning for a late lunch.  Afternoon at leisure.  Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 6 - WEDNESDAY - 02 March 2011

In the morning, depart with a picnic lunch and drive via Olduvai Gorge, viewing game en route to Serengeti.  Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Serena Lodge.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Africa's most famous fame reserve covers an area of almost 15,000 square kilometres and is renowned for its dense predator population and the annual wildebeest migration.  The park is part of the the much larger Serengeti eco-system, which includes Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve, and encompasses more than double this area.  The greater part of the park is open grassland, patches of acacia woodland and isolated areas of granite rock outcrops called koppies.  Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can be found here along with smaller concentrations of Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, impala, kongoni, Kirk's dik dik, klipspringer and small numbers of roan, oryx, oribi, eland and waterbuck.  There are also significant numbers of buffalo, giraffe and warthog.  Elephants are relatively scarce on the open plains, more common in the northern areas and the western corridor.  The few remaining black rhino are restricted to an inaccessible park of the park.  The most popular animals to be found here in greater abundance than elsewhere on the northern circuit are the cats.  Lion, cheetah and leopard may all be seen here along with other predators, such as spotted hyena, golden and black-backed jackals, wild cats and servals.

Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views over the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti, the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class style.  Drawing its inspiration from the circular “Rondavel” dwellings and winding paths of a traditional Maasai village, the lodge features thickly-thatched, stone-built rooms, spaciously set amongst groves of indigenous trees that are cooled by sparkling streams and papyrus-fringed ponds. Each room is accommodated in a stone-built, traditionally thatched “Rondavel” featuring natural stone bathrooms, wildwood balconies, rope-lashed staircases, leopard print drapes and intricately carved furniture, the overall effect of which is a unique blend of authentic ethnicity and world-class elegance.  As for the views, from lilac-streaked sunrise to diamond-domed night, the searingly sensational Serengeti delivers a series of timeless volcanic vistas that are second to none.

Day 7
- THURSDAY - 03 March 2011

Morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti.  Overnight at Serengeti Serena Lodge.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 8
- FRIDAY - 04 March 2011

Drive to Lake Manyara for dinner and overnight at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge.

Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake at the base of a sheer stretch of western Rift Valley escarpment.  The north-western area of this lake is protected in a 330 square kilometre national park, which contains a remarkable diversity of terrestrial habitats:  the grassy floodplain of the lakeshore, the rocky base of the escarpment, a belt of thick acacia woodland and a lush patch of groundwater forest just inside the northern entrance gate.  An interesting bio-diversity of fauna and flora can be observed here and a variety of large mammal species, including elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe and lion.  Perhaps, however, the most immediately visible residents are the troupes of olive baboon, sometimes found in the company of the smaller and rather beautiful blue monkey.  This is also a wonderful location for viewing groups of elephant and, for keen birders, Manyara has recorded almost 400 species due to the wide habitat diversity.

Standing high on the bluff of a dramatic ochre and terracotta streaked cliff above the flamingo-frosted expanse of Lake Manyara’s gleaming alkaline waters, Lake Manyara Serena Lodge commands panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor of the Great Rift Valley.  The circular, closely-thatched rooms echo the traditional Maasai “Boma” style of construction whilst featuring a vibrant interior design concept that reflects the Maasai people’s abiding love of brilliant scarlet-and-indigo checked “Shukas” (cloaks) and bright yellow, white, blue and orange beadwork.  Each room has a private veranda and breathtaking views of the shimmering reaches of the flamingo-frosted lake.
